I decided to take a look at a Memex animation i found on YouTube. It's a recording of a computer program created in 1995 intended to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bush's "As We May Think" paper. It's very interesting to have this audio-visual representation of what Bush envisioned this machine to do. I also found it interesting how similar the functionality and purpose of this machine is to that of the internet we use today. Again, there is this same idea that people are trying to create this machine that can do everything. With the Memex you can browse your book collection, store important information, call others, and so much more simply with the push of a button. The desire of this infinite and accessible source of information is what has driven us towards many of the technological accomplishments we see today. I truly believe that without Bush's vision of the Memex we would not have the worldwide web and many other information technologies as we see them today.

Memex Animation

I also found it interesting how similar the functionality and purpose of this machine is to that of the internet we use today. This is a very interesting idea of the Memex because I was not sure what to expect. I expected something that resembled a computer but was not sure how different it could be from an actual computer. It is also interesting to see how much technology has changed as compared to 1995's idea of the Memex. This Memex reminds of technology today in that you can easily share information and save information that you would like to see, for later. Only difference is that 1995's idea of the Memex is way bigger than anything we have nowadays, which can fit in our pockets.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the comment above, and the post written on how we would not have the worldwide web like we do today without the memex. I really enjoyed this video because when first reading about the memex, I could not picture what this machine was suppose to look like. Of course it is up for interpretation of the object but I liked seeing what others thought the machine looked like/did.
ReplyDeleteI also couldn't pinpoint what the machine Bush described would look like but this video gives you a good idea and it is also really similar to what we use today (computers). It's amazing that his ideas so long ago, resemble what we know today as the world wide web.
